Zuheros is situated in the Parque Natural Sierra Subbetica, an area of vast open countryside and small villages. Zuheros sits perched on the top a cliff, it conserves the traditional architecture of white house with ochre roofs. Tucked away on the side of a mountain this little village just bustles with character.
The population numbers only about 900 and the village clings to the side of a mountain, with the remains of a castle built onto and into a rocky crag. This strategic stronghold was captured in the Reconquest from the Moors in 1265 – quite remarkable in that Granada, only an hour's drive away, was not ‘reconquered’ and handed over to the Christians until 1492.
This is a great place to wander up and down the narrow streets and wide plaza, each one a picture on its own with the whitewashed walls and the earth coloured tile roofs standing out against the azure blue skies. The castle just dominates the village and the stunning 360 degree views from the top of the keep should not be missed.
The hospitality, the food, the company on all our trips was thoroughly enjoyed by all. You introduced all of us to a new way of living life to the fullest, hopefully something we will consider for our own futures.Graias amiga and amigo
