Zuheros is in the Cordoba Mountains and conserves the traditional architecture of white houses with ochre roofs.
The population numbers only about 900 and the village clings to the side of a mountain, with the remains of a castle built onto and into a rocky crag. This strategic stronghold was captured from the Moors in 1265 - quite remarkable in that Granada ( which is only an hour's drive away) was not handed over to the Catholics until 1492.
After visiting Priego de Cordoba it is the ideal place to stop for a late lunch and marvel at the views from the restaurant beside the castle remains.
